CHAPTER 9
âLocked,â Dorset announced grimly.
They had spent an indeterminate span of time wandering through the moonlit gardens in an effort to avoid being caught alone together. For part of the time, she had been convinced they were lost. The marquess, however, had been adamant they were not.
âAre you certain this is the east wing?â she asked him, biting her lip to keep from saying more.
She was reasonably certain they were at the west wing of the manor house.
âThis is the conservatory,â he insisted. âThese doors were open just the other night.â
âIt looks more like the library to me,â she could not help but to counter. âThe conservatory is all windows, and not nearly so much stone.â
âI am utterly certain this is the conservatory.â
She pursed her lips. âYou were also certain we were not heading into the maze earlier, and yet we were.â
He sighed. âNeed you remind me?â
âI was merely pointing out that you are not a perfect navigator.â
He cast a glance over his shoulder as he toyed with the door handles. Although his face was primarily shadowed, she swore his gaze burned her through the darkness. âI am an excellent navigator.â
âIf you were excellent at navigating, we would not have spent the last hour wandering through the Duchess of Bradfordâs gardens. And now, weâre quite trapped outside the house, alone in the dark, our reputations at stake.â
âYou are being unnecessarily dramatic, my dear. We will find our way into the house one way or another.â
âI hardly think I am being dramatic, unnecessarily or otherwise,â she said, gathering steam. âIndeed, Iâ ââ
But her words were smothered in the next moment.
By the Marquess of Dorsetâs lips.
And sweet heaven above, his lips were ambrosia. Sliding her arms around his neck and kissing him back seemed like the only sensible option. The night cloaked them in velvety darkness. His masculine scent teased her senses. He was so strong and warm. He tasted of sweet wine with a hint of the bite of tobacco. Strangely, she did not mind it on him.
His tongue dipped into her mouth, and she opened. Oh, this was wicked. He kissed marvelously well, kissed her with a familiarity that stole her breath, knowing just what she wanted. What she needed. And as before, his kisses lit fires within her.
Raging, furious fires.
She pressed herself shamelessly into him, her breasts crushing against his chest. Her nipples were hard and aching. A fluttering sensation had begun in her belly and traveled lower, settling between her thighs as surely as if his mouth were there, pleasuring her as heâd done before. Driving her to the edge of reason, to the dizzying heights of sensual madness.
He pulled his mouth from hers, but the kiss was not over yet. Instead, he dragged his lips along her jaw, as if he were savoring her, as if he couldnât bear to remove his lips from her body. When he kissed her throat, a new bolt of desire slid through her. This kiss was every bit as incendiary. Her head fell back.
